Free parent baby massage class CEIM training May 2017-page-001 (1).jpg

Parents who are curious about our Parent-Baby classes often cite a lack of funds as the number one reason they don’t sign up for the five weeks series taught on Saturdays at Family Massage Education Center. For those parents, here’s an opportunity to test out a class for free. Please call us at 541-482-3567 to get signed up. Please share this post with anyone in the Southern Oregon area who has an infant less than a year old.

The International Conference in Paris

The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) hosted the 24th annual international educational conference and general assembly from October 24th to November 1st. There were over 200 people from around the world who attended. “I had the great honor and pleasure of being one of the attendees at the trainers’ meeting with 50+ trainers from all over the world,” as stated by JoAnn Lewis, founder and educator at Family Massage Education Center (FMEC).

The IAIM’s mission is “to promote nurturing touch and communication through training, education and research so that parents, caregivers and children are loved, valued and respected throughout the world community.” IAIM is the largest and most experienced infant massage organization in the world with a presence in more than 50 countries. Here’s a map that shows the location of chapters around the world.

“Attending the Trainers’ Meeting during the International Conference gave me an opportunity to contribute to the mission on an international level. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the training meeting was the stroke review session in Paris. Sitting on the floor with fellow instructors, sharing our passion for infant massage, and encouraging each other was truly gratifying. Here we are, doing the stroke review,” said JoAnn.

During the rest of the year, as the founder of Family Massage Education Center, JoAnn has the privilege of sharing this mission on a local level in Ashland, Oregon. Additionally, she teaches IAIM’s Certified Educator of Infant Massage course in various locations in the Pacific Northwest and in California. In fact, JoAnn will be in Portland, Oregon, from March 17-20, 2017 teaching the CEIM course at East-West College located at 525 NE Oregon St., Portland, OR 97232. To register for that training, you may contact Lauren Haight, Continuing Education Coordinator, at 503-233-6500 or by email at

In the spring, JoAnn will be teaching in Ashland, Oregon from May 5-9, 2017. To register, you may contact Family Massage Education Center at 541-482-3567, by email at or register online.

An Idea for Date Night

What are you doing on Friday night for two hours? Dinner? Movie? Concert? Play?

How much do you think those options would cost you? $40? $60? $100? More?

I’m here to suggest another option that is not only fun, relaxing, financially practical, and unusual (for a typical date night) but also comes with some long term health benefits for you and your date. Learn basic massage!

Here at Family Massage Education Center, we have a two hour massage class for beginners, every Friday night from 630-830pm, for $55 per pair. We teach basic massage techniques to use at home, to improve health and happiness, and promote loving relationships with respect and trusting commmunication. We provide the massage oil, the massage table, sheets for those tables, and nurturing instruction presented in a relaxed, enjoyable, and fun environment by an experienced massage therapist who teaches massage locally and internationally.  Not only will you learn basic massage and proper body mechanics (so you don’t get tired giving a massage), but you will also get a massage in the process!

Register for a Friday date night by calling 541-482-3567, or online.

We offer more classes for the public at Family Massage Education Center, please see our offerings at:

Massage For All

We can get kinda serious about massage at the Family Massage Education Center. Not only is massage a big part of our livelihood; more importantly, massage is our PASSION! Our wonderful leader, JoAnn Lewis is not only the founder, creator, lead instructor, and owner of Family Massage Education Center, she’s also “Mom” to our other massage therapist, Kirk Dunlap. We are all about family and massage.

Additionally, we love cuteness. After all, we offer Pregnant Partners classes and Parent Baby classes, it’s no wonder we absolutely love babies! If you ever want sign up for these classes, check ’em out on our website, here.

Today’s bit of cuteness is this video we wanted to share: Puppy Massage. Hope you enjoy it. 🙂

Save Money. Learn Massage.

Massage is a growing specialty in the professional field, with many licensed massage therapists charging anywhere from $50 to $85 for an hour long massage. Without a referral from a primary care provider, many insurance companies fail to embrace the healing aspects of massage by limiting coverage for them, or refusing to provide coverage. Additionally, many people consider massage as a luxurious spa treatment, rather than an important part of their health regimen, so they lose out on some important health benefits because it may be viewed as cost prohibitive.  But is that really true even if insurance is not willing to cover??

Massage has numerous health benefits. According the Mayo Clinic online, some health benefits to massage are: “…effective treatment for reducing stress, pain, and muscle tension” “…and may be helpful for:

  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain”

While massage therapy is gaining some recognition (too slowly in my opinion) in mainstream professional medical and dental fields, but it is still too expensive for many people to add to their financial burdens. Here, at Family Massage Education Center, we offer a solution: an investment that potentially pays dividends your entire life.

Our Couples & Singles four week long series of classes costs $225. That equates to $56.25 per class for two people to receive and give a massage, or (since the point of this article is to show you how learning basic massage skills is economically smart…) roughly $28 per session per person. That’s a lot more affordable than $50 per person! Plus, each class session is two hours, instead of one! If that wasn’t fabulous enough….Family Massage Education Center provides the massage table, sheets, and oils for class! Have you ever priced a massage table?

JoAnn Lewis, our lead instructor, guides and demonstrates basic massage skills and then gives her students a chance to practice on their partner, and vice versa. She makes learning fun and enjoyable, and is encouraging and supportive, which goes a long way in building confidence. In four weeks, students learn the following:

  • 1st week: Feet, Legs, Hands, Arms, and body mechanics in giving massage
  • 2nd week: Body front
  • 3rd week: Body back
  • 4th week: Complete routine

Registration is easy, just go to our website, or call our staff at 541-482-3567. Don’t you want to learn massage and save some money?
